What we fix in Corpus Christi

Six jobs make up almost everything that goes wrong with a residential garage door. Each one has its own page with the real detail.

Most broken garage door spring repair calls we take in Corpus Christi start the same way - the door moved fine yesterday. That is normal. The components that fail are load-bearing, and load-bearing parts fail suddenly rather than gradually. In Corpus Christi, salt air corrodes springs, hinges and rollers far faster than inland, which is why we carry the parts for it on the van rather than ordering them in.

Lift a garage door with the spring disconnected and you understand the whole system in about two seconds. It is 130 to 190 pounds of steel on a double, and considerably more insulated. The torsion spring above the opening is wound to store almost exactly that much energy, so the two cancel and the door floats. The half-horsepower motor on the ceiling is a positioning device for a weightless object. Take the spring out of that equation and the motor is asked to deadlift something it was never rated for.

Anywhere in Corpus Christi or Portland, Robstown, Aransas Pass, there is no trip fee and no diagnostic fee. If you decide not to go ahead after seeing the estimate, you owe nothing.

What you are probably seeing

Neighbours describe it as a gunshot or a car door slammed far too hard. It usually happens with nobody in the garage, and often at three in the morning, because steel contracts as the space cools and a spring at the end of its life will choose the coldest hour to let go. The next person to press the button finds a motor that strains, lifts the door two inches, and stops.

If any of that matches, a technician can diagnose it on site in about ten minutes. We do not guess at it down the phone, and we do not charge to look.

What is actually going wrong

A residential torsion spring is rated in cycles, not years. The standard spring supplied with most doors is a 10,000-cycle spring, and one cycle is one trip up and one trip down. A household that opens the door four times a day uses about 1,460 cycles a year, so the arithmetic gives seven years. A household with two working adults and a teenager can double that rate and see the spring go in three.

Springs come in a specific wire gauge, inside diameter and length, and the three together have to match the door's weight. A spring that is close but not right will lift the door and then fail early, which is why we measure the old spring and weigh the door rather than fitting whatever is on the van.

On a two-spring door both springs went up on the same day and have done the same work since. When one breaks, the other is not fine - it is at the same point in the same life, typically weeks from the same end. That is why the estimate shows both. Take one if you prefer, and the second call-out is on you rather than a surprise.

How to tell us what is wrong

None of this involves touching anything under tension, and all of it makes the phone call shorter and the estimate more accurate. Two minutes in the garage with the door down is enough.

  1. Look at the coil above the doorA broken torsion spring is visible from the floor. There will be a gap of an inch or two in what should be a continuous coil, or the spring will be in two obvious pieces. You do not need to touch anything to see it.
  2. Try lifting it by hand, onceWith the opener released and the door fully down, lift gently. A door with a working spring comes up almost weightlessly. If it feels like lifting a person, the counterbalance is gone - stop there and put it back down.
  3. Check whether there are one or two springsIt changes the quote, and you can count them from the floor. Note it down before you call and the estimate over the phone will be closer to the real one.
  4. Listen to what the opener doesA motor that runs, strains, lifts the door two or three inches and gives up is reporting a weight problem, not an opener problem.

Whatever you find, do not try to correct it. The value is in the description you give us, not in the repair - a technician arriving in Corpus Christi who already knows what failed arrives with the right part on the van.

What the job actually includes

Below is the actual scope of a broken garage door spring repair, so you can hold any estimate - ours included - against it.

  1. End bearings inspected for play, since a worn bearing is what put the last spring out of true.
  2. Winding cones and set screws replaced rather than reused where they show wear.
  3. Cables inspected end to end and the drums reset so both sides lift equally.
  4. A replacement sized to the door: wire gauge, inside diameter and length measured against the door's actual weight, not guessed from the model.
  5. The opener's force settings re-checked, because they were set against the old spring.
  6. The centre bearing plate checked and greased while the shaft is exposed - it is a two-minute job then and a strip-down later.

If a quote you have been given elsewhere does not include the balance check and the safety reversal test, it is not finished work. Those two steps decide whether the repair lasts and whether the door is safe around people.

What happens between your call and a working door

The call itself takes about three minutes. We ask what the door is doing, what it sounds like, whether anything is visibly out of place, and roughly how old it is. That is usually enough to know which parts the van needs.

Loading the van from that description is the part that decides whether your broken garage door spring repair is a one-visit job or a two-visit job. It is also the part a national dispatch number cannot do, because it does not know who is coming.

On site the technician confirms the diagnosis on the door. Sometimes the phone description was wrong - a 'broken opener' is quite often a broken spring - and it is better to find that out with the parts already in the van.

The estimate is written before work starts. The repair itself is usually under two hours, and the door is tested and balanced before anyone leaves.

What it costs

We do not publish a fixed price for broken garage door spring repair, and anybody who does is quoting you before they have seen the door.

It depends on the door's weight, the cycle rating of the spring going back on, whether the tracks or brackets were damaged when it failed, and whether one side needs doing or both. Those are not upsells, they are the variables.

What we can promise is the process: a free visit, a free written estimate, a fixed price agreed in advance, and nothing to pay if you decide against it. No trip fee and no diagnostic fee anywhere in Nueces County.

Please do not keep using it

This is the one repair on a garage door that genuinely hurts people. A wound torsion spring holds enough energy to break the bones in a hand, and the winding bars have to be held against that load while the set screws come loose. It is not a matter of being careful. It is a matter of having the right bars, the right cone, and having done it enough times to know how the load moves.

There is no safe way to keep using it, and there is no prize for trying. Load that should be on the counterbalance goes somewhere else instead - hinges, brackets, the opener's gear - and each of those is a bigger bill than the part that actually failed.

If the car has to come out, do it with the door fully down and the opener released. A partly-raised door with no working spring will finish the journey by itself.

Why we will not quote this one over the phone

Nothing here is an upsell. Each one genuinely changes what the work involves, and each one has to be looked at rather than assumed.

FactorWhy it matters
Bearing and shaft conditionA worn centre bearing puts the next spring out of true. Cheap to deal with while the shaft is exposed and expensive afterwards.
One side or twoTwo-spring doors age together. Doing one now and one in a month means paying the labour twice.
Door weightA single door, a double, and an insulated double are three different spring specifications. The technician weighs or calculates it rather than eyeballing it.
AccessA low ceiling, a shelf across the header or a door that has been boxed in adds time, and time is most of the labour.
Cycle ratingA 10,000-cycle spring and a 25,000-cycle spring are different parts at different prices. On a door opened six times a day the second one is the cheaper choice over its life.

The technician goes through whichever of those apply to your door before writing the estimate, so the number you are given is the number on the invoice.

When a repair stops being worth it

There is a point at which putting parts into a door is throwing money at it, and there is a point well before that at which a salesman will tell you there is. These are the lines we actually use.

SituationWhat we recommend
Spring, cable or roller failure on sound panelsRepair. These are consumable parts on a door with decades of life left in it.
Door is off its track after an impactRepair first. Realign, find the cause, and only then judge whether panels are sound.
Wooden door that has begun to swell and bindDepends entirely on the frame. Worth a look before you commit to either.
Damage or rot across two or more panelsReplace. Section-by-section repairs stop making financial sense at that point.
Door works but is deafeningRepair. Nylon rollers, new hinges and a proper service usually solve it.
One dented or cracked panelRepair. Individual sections are orderable for every mainstream brand.

The short version: the mechanism is consumable and the door is not. Springs, cables and rollers get replaced across a door's life as a matter of course. Panels are the thing that decides whether the door itself is finished.

What to use, and what to stop using

The most common thing we find on a badly maintained door in Corpus Christi is not neglect - it is the wrong product applied enthusiastically.

WD-40 is a water displacer and a solvent. Sprayed on hinges and rollers it strips the grease that was doing the job and leaves a film that attracts dust. It has a place on a garage door and that place is nowhere.

Grease on the track is the other one. The track is not a bearing surface - the rollers roll along it. Grease turns it into a grit collector that grinds the roller bearings out.

What you want is a white lithium or silicone garage door lubricant, on the hinge pivots, the roller stems, the spring coils, the bearing plates and the opener rail. Twice a year, wiped rather than flooded.

The two brands that need their own tools

Almost every residential door in Corpus Christi is standard torsion hardware, and standard hardware is what the van carries. Two exceptions come up often enough to be worth naming: Wayne Dalton's TorqueMaster, where the spring lives inside the tube, and the direct-drive European heads.

BrandNotes
GenieScrew-drive and belt-drive heads. Intellicode remotes and carriage assemblies are the usual failure points, and both are parts rather than a reason to change the opener.
LiftMaster / ChamberlainThe same units under two names. Gear kits, logic boards and Security+ 2.0 remotes are stocked, and the older 315MHz heads can still be paired.
CraftsmanBuilt on Chamberlain internals for most of their production run, so the gear kits and boards are shared and readily available.
ClopayThe most common door brand we work on. Panels, hinges and struts are orderable individually, so one damaged section does not mean a whole door.
AmarrSections and hardware are widely available and the tracking is standard, which keeps repair costs sensible.
Sommer / MarantecLess common here, direct-drive heads, and the parts have to be ordered - so we confirm the model before the van is loaded.

If yours is not there, it is almost certainly still standard torsion hardware. Read us the badge on the door or the model number off the opener when you call and we will confirm before the van is loaded.

Questions we get asked in Corpus Christi

How long does the repair take?

Most broken garage door spring repair jobs are finished within the same visit, typically under two hours.

Can you come out today in Corpus Christi?

Usually, yes. We hold same-day slots for Corpus Christi and the surrounding towns, and a door stuck open or a car shut in goes to the front of the list.

Should I replace both sides or just the broken one?

Springs on a two-spring door are wound the same number of cycles and age together. If one has gone, the other is at the same point in its life and is usually weeks behind. Replacing one and leaving the other means paying the labour twice, which is why we quote both and let you decide with the numbers in front of you.

Do you take card?

Yes - card, and we issue a written invoice for every job. Nothing is cash-only and nothing is priced on the doorstep.

Why did it fail without any warning?

Count the trips rather than the years and the failure stops looking random. One cycle is up and down once; the spring most builders fit is good for ten thousand of them. Two cars leaving and returning on a weekday is four cycles, plus the school run, plus the bins - call it six. Six a day is 2,190 a year, which spends a ten-thousand-cycle spring in under five. Nothing has gone wrong when it breaks. It has simply been used up.

Do you charge for the estimate?

No. The visit and the written estimate are free anywhere in Nueces County. You pay only if you agree the price and we do the work.
